A bit of computational sound art

Batuhan Bozkurt does good stuff. It's definitely worth checking out the Otomata - a music synthesizer based on cellular automata, and Circuli - another funny music toy.

They sound the best together, and you can add rain and fire to make it just perfect :-)

Stravinsky in jail


In 1940 Igor Sravinsky was arrested in Boston for playing his arrangement of the American National Anthem, which was considered a 'national property' by Massachusetts law (it was forbidden to tamper with any national property). He was released the same day after convincing authorities of his good intentions.

Acoustical and physical dynamics of the diatonic harmonica

"The harmonica is arguably the most widely played instrument in the world, yet there is a surprising paucity of published studies of its acoustics or physical dynamics. The typical diatonic harmonica and the physical forces involved in its natural function are described, and simple observations of the harp’s functions are reported. The speaking of the reeds, naturally, when producing a bend, and when speaking as an overblow or overdraw is discussed and investigated by simple stopping of the reeds, by videostroboscopic analysis, and by recording vibration of the reeds with displacement gauges. The reeds of the ten hole harmonica can be made to vibrate at varying frequencies depending on the size and shape of the player’s vocal tract. Three different modes of speaking from each hole and its pair of reeds are revealed and studied: first, naturally in a closing mode, either blown or drawn; second, as a bend, either blown or drawn, with pitch in the interval between the two notes in the hole; and third, as an overblow or overdraw in an opening mode with a pitch outside the interval between the two natural notes of the hole. This dynamic interaction allows the player to speak with the instrument perhaps as with no other."

"To play the high range of the saxophone, players must learn to tune a strong resonance of their vocal tract to the desired note. This resonance of the air in the vocal tract may be stronger than the resonances in the bore of the instrument: the acoustics of the saxophonist is sometimes more important than that of the instrument. This is a brief introduction to some of our recent research on this question, reported in Science (download paper). It is part of the project of PhD student Chen Jer Ming.

Col Loughnan plays the frankensaxFor a few decades, acousticians – and some musicians – have debated how important the vocal tract is in the playing of clarinet and saxophone. We have recently made direct measurements of the resonances of saxophonists' vocal tracts, while they played. Over the standard range of the instrument, the tract resonances vary among players and have no simple relation to the note played. In the high (altissimo) range, the professional saxophonists studied all tuned a strong resonance of their tracts systematically to frequencies slightly above that the desired note. The amateurs studied did not tune a strong resonance and were also unable to play notes in the altissimo range."
